Tonight during the 2024 Game Awards, we got our first real look at the previously announced Borderlands 4, the next main entry in Gearbox’s super-popular first-person looter shooter series.
Here’s the first gameplay trailer which shows off new worlds, guns, features, and what seems to be a new crew of Vault Hunters:
In the new trailer, which starts right where the initial reveal teaser ended, we see a large battle happening between what appears to be an army of angry mutants and mannequin-looking aliens who seem to be led by a strange, ominous bad guy whose face is hidden in the teaser.
According to the official PlayStation Blog, this new bad guy is Borderlands 4’s primary antagonist and he’s known as the Timekeeper. He rules over Kairos, the new main planet of the game.
We also see a ton of new guns and locales in the gameplay trailer during a montage. And at the end of that, there’s a moment where the player uses a holo-grapple hook-thingy and zips up to a higher area in a few seconds. Older Borderlands games didn’t have this much mobility, but Borderlands 3 did add mantling and more movement options. It seems the fourth entry in Gearbox’s sci-fi franchise will add even more ways to move around while killing bandits and looting weapons.
Borderlands 4 was previously announced in August. The game is set to arrive in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
You can read this breakdown of the original trailer, which looks at a ton of the references and clues hidden in that first teaser and which might reveal more about who we will be fighting in this next Borderlands game.
