HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us returns for season 2 in just a few months. Sony revealed the hit horror game will be back on TV with fresh episodes beginning in April and dropped a new trailer for fans to pore over in the meantime.

The Last of Us season 2’s April 2025 release was announced tonight during Sony’s press conference at CES 2025. It was an odd place to drop blockbuster entertainment news, but fans of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic series ultimately won’t care. They now have a new 60-second trailer full of short references to pivotal moments in the games.

Take a look:

The first season of The Last of Us debuted on HBO back in 2023. It covers the events of the first game, originally released for PlayStation 3 a decade prior, with the events of The Last of Us Part II largely expected to be divided between season 2 and a future season 3.

Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the show follows a surrogate father-daughter pair as they navigate the violent vestiges of humanity after a deadly disease wipes out society as we know it. Guided by showrunners Craig Mazin, best known for the mini-series Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann, the lead writer and director of the games, HBO’s adaptation ended up being one of 2023’s hit shows, proving games could be good fodder for prestige TV under the right circumstances.

The Last of Us is now spearheading Sony’s game-to-TV-and-movie pipeline, with Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima all getting various spin-offs in the next few years. A God of War series is also in development, though its timeline remains up in the air following recent departures from the writing and directing teams.
