During tonight’s Game Awards, a lot of big games were announced and a long list of awards were handed out. And that was all fine. There were even some really exciting surprises that I liked. But the best part of the show by far was whenever Statler and Waldorf from The Muppets showed up to heckle host Geoff Keighley and mock the whole affair.
Characters from The Muppets have appeared at past Game Awards shows, but this year, to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Geoff Keighley’s yearly trailer-thon (with some awards interrupting the commercials), he invited Statler and Waldorf. And if you were worried that these two incorrigible hecklers would not be allowed to rip apart the show, Geoff, and everything else, don’t be. These two famous Muppet insult comics were on fire tonight and provided the biggest laughs and best moments during this year’s very long Game Awards event.
Here is their first appearance early on in the show:
After noticing some empty seats in the theater they had this to say to Geoff: “We heard you always sell out!”
When talking about how the Game Awards is turning 10 years old, they joked about Geoff hosting it, saying: “How long is this bozo gonna go on? Well that’s what I’ve been asking for 10 years!”
During another appearance, the two of them begged for all the commercials to stop and asked someone to help them. That part was very relatable for all the writers and reporters covering this show all night. It was all very good stuff.
Here’s some more of the duo being wonderful:
But perhaps the best part came when they joked about Geoff and his friend, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima. The thing is, I know that Geoff is a massive Muppets fan, so he was loving every moment of this.
Not sure if Kojima was a fan, though…Here’s the moment via Kotaku reporter Ethan Gach:
Anyway, I suggest that these two be invited to every video game event and convention. And kudos to Geoff for letting them dunk on him and the show like that.
